Our Rob or Ross (Ouroboros)

For many years now (3 to be precise) I have been writing blog posts. They vary in topic from IT related things to my constant struggle with understanding the human mind. Where can I read these ramblings I hear you cry. Well you can’t I never had a blog. And this is an explanation why.

During those years I have been trying to become more of a designer than developer. I often read of people going the other way. Creative art types that pick up a bit of php/html/css. I could code to a reasonable standard but my design skills were poor. I always felt that if I was to create a blog I should design it myself. It would be a true test of my skills. And while I have created themes in my professional life it’s not an over night thing.

All that time my desire for features grew. I wanted twitter integration, I wanted Jason Santa Maria style posts, I wanted links to my other projects on there and I wanted it all to be typographically beautiful. I wanted the world. And more.

The problem with all this is that it is not an easy thing to do. I have freelance jobs, a girlfriend, friends, djing and a full time job. I’m not good at sitting down and finishing a project at the best of times. So I had an idea. Why not launch with a free theme and then edit as I go. That way I could get my posts and ramblings out there and I could slowly work on designing and modifying the blog.

The thing is that is still leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. I’m a designer right? A freelancer too. Want me to design you a blog? Yeah – why haven’t I designed my own? You mean free themes are ok? Well why don’t I just get a free theme and not pay you any money? But would you help me set it up? And maybe move the header a bit? And create me a logo? All for free? I didn’t want to go down that road.

So this is my eternal dilemma. Do I design my own theme and basically never launch a blog or do I go against everything I believe in and go with a free theme? You’ll find out in my next post…

Oh man, where did you get such a good theme? I say keep it.

Except you ought to maybe have a header with a logo…possibly in flash. You should totally get rid of the sidebar too! Also, add a background gradient that’s dynamic on page refresh and tie all your posts into google maps so we can see where you posted from and then make an app in rubyonrails that will show us all the coffee shops near that area! That would be amazing. You should totally do it.

I’ll let you know when I have some more ideas for you to implement.

This blog is going to be ballin’
